CHARING (Newlands)

General Location

Newlands Farm, Charing

Charing is located on the A20 between Maidstone and Ashford. The current Charing racecourse lies beside the A20 - the Newlands racecourse was to the south of the village - almost exactly one mile south of the 'new' course. It was used from 1947 until the mid-1960's .

Looking at the aerial picure the road at the bottom of the course map above is the road running from north to south in the 'multimap' photo.


Winner of the 4 mile race at Detling in the 90's turns up 35 years too late to watch the other course in the area that held 4 mile races.
Notes

The start would have been in front of the tree line at the low point of the course. The runners would have travelled over the brook and uphill giving a good view of the jumps over the far side.
