| Notes | The course was on the side of the South Downs and there was a smashing
view of the Sussex countryside from just inside the home straight. It was
just under a mile in length. The course was left handed and a couple of the
bends were very sharp but had the benefit of some natural banking, in the
right direction, in them.
The runners travelled gently uphill over the first, past the finishing post, over the second and then sharply downhill around the 180 degree bend. Three fences on the lower straight, each of them slightly downhill Round the bottom bend, still slightly downhill until the ground levelled just before the next fence. Steep uphill then until going past the point of departure when the slope becomes gentle again. Don't forget jockeys - twice more still (and nobody managed to count wrong in either meeting). Best view was from the steep hill the opposite side from the paddock (from where the picture was taken) - lovely on a sunny spring day. Luckily it was never wet so we never had the chance to see how many spectators could be crammed under two small bushes. Safety factor was 17 with 15 allowed in the maiden. |

| History | Rodmell racecourse had a very short history. Two meetings took place there in 2000 when it replaced Heathfield. It became the first meeting in the South East to lose it's racing to 'foot and mouth' in 2001 and it's proximity to Plumpton racecourse meant that the meeting had to move if it wished to continue racing on Easter Monday. It has been superceded by Godstone. |
