| Hunt | THE LEICESTER ARMS MEMBERS, FARMERS & SUBSCRIBERS RACE Just the two runners in the hunt race Funny Money (James Sarchet) 1/4 fav. and May Zee Wong (Paul Blagg) 2/1. The former opened up a couple of lengths on the latter going into the last circuit and then went away as pleased over the last half of the last lap. |
| Veterans & Novices | THE WEALD WASTE SOUTH EAST HUNTS CLUB VETERAN & NOVICE RIDERS Nine runners in the vets and novices for which Honourable Spider (Peter Bull) was made a 2/5 fav. and he had galloped himself into the lead with a circuit to go. Avalon Buck (Peter Johnson 18/1) and See Red Billdan (Steve Spice 18/1) had tried to go with him for the last mile but were now losing touch. Two jumps later and the favourite had opened up a fifteen length lead. Approaching the fourth last Peter Bull had a look behind to see where the opposition was and a spectator promptly offered him the use of his binoculars. Two fences later and a telescope would have been more appropriate. Bustling Rio (Camilla Ewart 5/1) came with a late run and very nearly beat River Bailiff (Tim O'Callaghan 13/2) for second place in the private race between those that were not 18/1 shots. |
| 3.10 Restricted | THE PLEASE SUPPORT KENT AIR AMBULANCE RESTRICTED RACE The Restricted could only muster four runners. We lost Alazylady (David Rose 6/1) when the rider lost his stirrups after completing a circuit. Battle Homours (Felix Wheeler) dropped out of contention half way round the last circuit. This left the favourite Pampered Lad (Andrew Pennock 4/5) with a ten length lead over the remaining Nicodemus (Helen Williams 5/2). The former was being rather deliberate at his fences but looked to have the race in his grasp as he came to the last eight lengths to the good but he was struggling with the uphill finish and Nicodemus found a sprint finish sufficient to take him past the favourite twenty yards from the line. |
| Mens Open |
THE POLEBROOK MENS OPEN RACE Sheriff's Friend (Chris Gordon) winner of 12 races in '02 to '04 before missing '05 was made favourite at 6/4 with another horse that missed '05 after running a series of wins in '04 Asthefellowsaid (Nibby Bloom) a 2/1 shot. Last weeks winner in the heavy at Parham Altereek (Gordon Gallagher) was a 6/1 shot whilst normal mud-lover and winner in the soft at Godstone Little Farmer (Philip Hall) was two points shorter at 4's. The field was well spread after a first circuit and a bit and Asthefellowsaid was quickly struggling. The favourite and Altereek opened up a twenty length gap between them and the others going into the final mile. The Sheriff opened up a four length gap going to the second last and scooted away thereafter. Not for the first time Altereek sulked without company and applied the brakes approaching the last - but was happy to follow Little Farmer over it after a quick breather so that just three of the seven completed. |
| Ladies Open |
THE KNIGHT FRANK LADIES OPEN RACE A very competitive nine runner Ladies race for which two time winner in East Anglia A Few Bob Back (Camilla Ewart) was made the even money favourite. Indoux, going for a four-timer (Cynthia Haydon) was at 2's. Another winner in the mud in East Anglia Minino (Caroline Taylor) was priced at 6's whilst another mud-lover coming in from a win was Stylish Dave (Lisa Stock - heavily backed in from 14's to 7's). Exodous (Anna Sansom) was also at 7's whilst top of the ground lover Spring Gale (Zoe Turner) was surprisingly no longer than 8/1. Ironically two of these - Spring Gale and Minino have been known to down tools at the drop of the flag. Spring Gale started to play at silly sods but when they jumped off it was Minino who decided to let them all have twenty lengths start - although this had not been irretrievable at High Easter. Stylish Dave took them along at a fair lick and with a circuit to go all of the non-fancied runners had dropped by the wayside. Stylish Dave continued the resolute gallop through the mud and slowly all bar a couple dropped off the end. At the third from home Indoux and A Few Bob Back were still hanging on just three lengths behind until Stylish Dave upped the pace even more. Thereafter it was a case of who got second - which went to Indoux. |
| Maiden |
THE CHAPPLE CHASE OPEN MAIDEN RACE The ten maidens probably went a bit too fast for their own good and with a circuit to go it was down to three serious contenders. It would have been two if Philip Hall hadn't performed wonders to stay on board Buster Mai after he blundered badly at the fifth from home. Luteur Des Pictons had lost touch with the others when having a tired fall at the second last. This left one of the two five-year-olds in the race Napolito (Chris Gordon) to outstay the other finisher six year old Buster Mai. |
