THE OPEN MAIDEN RACE
1 - Tates Avenue (Chris Gordon) 5/4 fav. |

With the possibility of 2007 being the last season of racing at Parham some
racegoers were rather ambitious in looking for suitable souvenirs of the
racecourse to take home with them.

Cape Stormer (Marcus Gorman) returns from his canter around half of the course.

12:00 13h2 - Div. 1
When the runners re-appeared from behind the wood Springcroft Red Admiral
had a two length lead over the favourite and diminutive Twyford Cointreau
(Tabitha Worsley 7/1). The latters tiny legs couldn't find any more as Bridget
moved up to the leader. As the pair turned for home Bridget was hard at work
on the tail-flashing grey whilst Emma sat confident and was able to draw
away by half a length. All 11 hands 2 of Twyford Cointreau was able to hold
off the closing pack. Div. 2
This time the six runners re-appeared from behind the wood well bunched.
Little Tinker (Gemma Cobb) and Tiny Tim (Frankie Hickman) shared a two length
lead at the halfway stage but the latter was quickly swallowed up by the
favourite. Three lengths covered the leading four as they straightened for
home. Clonross Star (Georgina Andrews) opened up a two length lead a furlong
from home and held it to the line despite a fast finish from Goldsborough
Moonlight Mist (Tom Hedgecock) who snatched second on the line. 12:45 14h2 -
Not for the first time this season the favourite The Little Brown Mare dwelt
at the start. When the runners re-appeared from behind the wood Ivory Girl
(Tom Cannon 3/1) had a length lead over Pepsi (Georgina Andrews) with TLBM
two lengths further behind. At this stage at the previous Parham meeting
Hector suffered a major steering failure. It would appear that Hector must
have lent the dodgy steering wheel to Tom who now suffered a similar problems
(and more than one of the followers turning the sharp left hand nearly went
with them). This allowed the TLBM and Pepsi to open up a five length gap
over the followers. The favourite had opened up a three length lead as they
straightened for home and, with a couple of cheeky looks over the shoulder,
the race was accounted for. |
| Hunt | THE CHIDDINGFOLD, LECONFIELD & COWDRAY AND KENT & SURREY BLOODHOUNDS HUNT RACE Four declared for the Hunt Race. We lost Bound To Be Light (Sam Hanson 8/1) at the second. The horse jumping left all of Sams weight came down on the right leg - and the saddle went round with it. Luckily for Sam he came off before they reached the next fence - as, by that stage, the saddle was right underneath the horse. A circuit and two fences later Castle Arrow (Rose Williams 7/2) hit the fence and despite a long drawn out battle Gravity 1 Rose nil. Mick Sheridan managed to keep Diamond Road (8/1) to within two lengths of Aslapoftheeuro (Phil York 2/5 fav.) until the second last when the favourite went away. |
| Confined | THE INSTONE AIR SERVICES CONFINED RACE Of the three runners in the Confined it was the favourite Altereek (Chris Gordon 2/5 fav.) who was never particularly travelling well - always wanting to get in close to the jumps and suggesting that he wasn't happy with the firmness of the ground. As they left the favourite behid after the sixth from home it was Luke Kilgariff on Chef Chippie (9/2) who made the first move but at they turned for home it was Ballystone (Sarah Ashby 6/1) who found the turn of foot needed. Altereek finishing a dustant third. |
| Restricted | THE RESTRICTED RACE Three again for the Restricted. After being very close ly grouped for the first circuit and a half it was Phar Afield (Steve Spice 6/1) who couldn't go when the other two upped the pace. Court Award (Chris Gordon 4/5 fav.) had a length lead over the last jump but, in a driving finish, David Turner got Warren Hill (11/10) half a length to the good by the time the line was reached. |
| Ladies Open | THE JACKSON-STOPPS & STAFF LADIES OPEN RACE The two runners for the Ladies Race were not seperated by a lot in the betting ring. Lord Euro (Hannah Grissell 4/6 fav) slowly pulling away from Dick McCarthy (Sarah Ashby 11/8) over the last five fences. Unfortunately Dick McCarthy finished lame and, at the age of 14, it seems likely that the South-East Leading Points scorer of 2004 may well be applying for his pension book and retirement from racing. (Maybe not - as there was no heat in the leg and he came sound again two days later.) |
| Mens Open | THE MENS OPEN RACE Cedar Chief would have been the only opponent for Cape Stormer but he was lame this morning after being shod yesterday. So Marcus had the honours of cantering past the winning post by himself. (Cantering be damned - he had a fair old lick on by the time he went past the post and it was some time before Marcus returned to claim his walk-over). |
| Maiden | THE OPEN MAIDEN RACE Biggest field of the day was the six for the maiden. Having been beaten on two odds-on favourites Chris Gordon's day didn't look as if it was going to improve a lot when he promptly got dumped as Tates Avenue (5/4 fav.) turned to go down to the start. Chris decided to walk down to the start after his mount had been caught. Things didn't improve when his mount mistook the first jump for fence out of the Pardubice - probably bruising a few bits of Chris that he had managed to avoid bruising when checking out the going a few minutes earlier. A big bold jumper that had suffered the virus worse than most of those in the Gordon yard the favourite was always happier when allowed to bowl along in front. Lady L'orelei was having her first outing since finishing second three years ago, for no fault of hers, and tried to hang on to the favourite for as long as possible but was always fighting a losing battle. Given the fast time of the race she may well be 10 before she loses her maiden tag - but that should be a formailty given the right race. |
