13h2: Last weeks winner Tiny Tim (Frankie Hickman) jumped well at the flag-drop and cornered tightly. Newcomer Slinky (Phoebe Salter) ran rather wide around the bend and gave Phoebe a length to catch up the straight. Although progress was being made the line came too fast. Little Tinker (Gemma Cobb) running on to take third.

14h2: Tom Cheeseman on Shiloh got the jump on the starter, taking a three length lead very quickly and stretching the field out. The Little Brown Mare (Hector Worsley up) however was very slow away. Tom gave his mare a breather at a third distance - at which point  The Little Brown Mare and Hector were charging through the field. At the half way stage The Little Brown Mare passed the early leader and Tom kicked for home for fear of the 'other brown mare' stealing the run on him. The two were pulling away from the others and flat to the boards as they passed the Open Ditch, after which the runners need to jink to the left. Shiloh negotiated the bend - TLBM didn't make it and headed off towards Pulborough. Shiloh was never in danger thereafter - William Hickman just taking second in a bunch of five. Hector, having completed a large additional circle, cantered home (no correction - bolted home) after rejoining at the correct point.

(In all fairness to Hector - who was certainly the smallest rider in the field, the race video shows that TLBM was hanging away from the turn to the left for a long period).

Hunt Race

THE POWELLS HUNT RACE

Three runners in the Hunt Race. David Evatt on the favourite Ichi Cavalo (2/5 fav.) upping the pace on the final circuit and drawing away from Lancier D'Estruval (Phil York 6/1) who finished a couple of lengths ahead of Butcher Beyes (Sam Hanson 5/2).

The hunt race runners at the far side of the course! (& who can prove otherwise!) (or it could be the second race!)

Restricted

THE TIM DUNLOP MEMORIAL RESTRICTED RACE

Seven runners in the Restricted which was run in very misty conditions. Sword Fighter (Phil York 4/1) and Private Percival (Paul Blagg 5/1) opened up a large gap from the remaining three on the last circuit and the favourite John The Mole (James Owen 7/4 fav.) seemed to be labouring at the back of the following bunch of three. After the fourth last the favourite seemed to find another two gears and started to run on like a horse possessed. The favourite passed a tiring Private Percival at the third last and then collared Sword Fighter, eventually the only other finisher, as they ran to the last.

Confined

THE DAVID SANDEMAN MEMORIAL CONFINED RACE

The fog, that had crawled over the South Downs, cleared and turned to steady rain in time for the eight runner Confined..The field were still quite tightly bunched with a circuit to go. Altereek (Gordon Gallagher 7/1) broke clear with three jumps to go. Heaven Is Above (James Owen 4/1) was the only one to give chase but could close the gap to nothing less than the length between them at the line. Ballystone (Sarah Ashby 8/1) ran on to take third.

Ladies Open

THE LINKS OF LONDON LADIES OPEN RACE
The race winner qualifies for Huntingdon Hunter Chase on May 16th

The 7 runner Ladies race looked as if it was turning into a Turner challenge as Zoe on Leatherback (5/2) and Kelly Smith on Ojays Alibi (12/1) ran side by side at the front for the first two miles. As the latter started to fade half way round the last circuit Zoe upped the pace and stole a good lead over the others. Twenty lengths clear at the third from home Zoe maintained the gap to the line. Dick McCarthy (Sarah Ashby 5/2) and Persian King (Anna Sansom 5/2) ran on too late and had to settle for the minor placings.

Mens Open

THE HARWOODS MENS OPEN RACE
The race winner qualifies for Towcester Hunter Chase on May 15th

Seven started the Mens Open where Cape Stormer (Marcus Gorman) and Little Herman (Chris Gordon) shared favouritism at 6/4 with the others all at long odds. Marcus upped the pace after the fourth from home. When Marcus eventually came out of the mist he was well clear of Perange (Alex Merriam 14/1) with Keltic Heritage (S Jones) taking third.

Maiden

THE LATILLA-CAMPBELL MAIDEN RACE (OPEN)
A qualifier (first two home) for the Grants Cherry Brandy Maiden Final at Folkestone

Only four for the maiden - reduced to three when Bound To Be Light jumped badly left and unseated his rider at the first. See Red Billdan (Steve Spice 2/1) opened up a big lead, along with the loose horse. When his new friend decided to head in the wrong direction See Red Billdan intimated that he would rather go with his new chum. Asked to jump eighth fence without his mate and the toys came out the pram. Leaving just the two - Clover Bay (Jody Sole 6/4 jt. fav.) opened up a lead over Inis Eile (Hannah Grissell 6/4 jt. fav.) from the fourth from home. The latter had never been jumping particularly well and eventually, when asked to jump the last, with Clover Bay well gone, Inis Eile threw in the towel.
