Race reviews
| Hunt | THE GORING HOTEL MID-SURREY FARMERS AND COAKHAM BLOODHOUNDS HUNT RACE Seven declared here. Very close in the betting with Mamora Sands (Peter Bull) just the most fancied at 2/1. At a quarter-point longer was the Stuart Robinson owned and piloted Magnus Veritas whilst another quarter-point longer at 5/2 was recent High Easter winner Indoux (Cynthia Haydon). Well bunched for the first circuit but Indoux ups the pace going up the hill second time round. At the top of the hill it is a two length lead over Magnus Veritas with Steve The Fish a further length behind and the remainder out of contention. Magnus Veritas and Indoux jump the fourth last together with Steve The Fish slowly dropping off the pair. Magnus Veritas takes a length lead into the third last - jumps the better and is now two to the good. Two lengths still at the second last but Stuart Robinson is hard at work whilst Cynthia sits quietly. Indoux slowly reduces the gap, rises fractionally the earlier at the last and Magnus Veritas has nothing more to give. Steve The Fish retains third place. |
| Restricted | THE BROADBASE MARKETING RESTRICTED RACE This saw the smallest field of the day with only four participants. 2004 High Easter Maiden winner Nigels Dream was the even money favourite. Next in the market were the two East Anglian runners Rocja (Rupert Stearn) at 2's and Rakatia (James Owen) at 4's. A length covering all four as they head for the fourth last after a steady two miles and a bit. Rocja two from Carvilla (Steve Spice 8/1) a length to Nigels Dream who stumbles on landing and another length to Rakatia who then goes past the favourite. The gaps are four and four at the next.and then six and six by the penultimate. Rakatia closes to within two lengths of a tired Carvilla by the last and passes him on the run-in but Rocja has gone by now! |
| Intermediate |
THE HISCOX INTERMEDIATE RACE A nice healthy 10 went to the post for the Intermediate. Unlucky to be beaten here three weeks ago No Reward (Philip Hall) was the 2/1 favourite. Restricted winner that day Aslaopoftheeuro (Phil York) was half a point longer at 5/2. Sliabh Foy (Hannah Grissell) at 5's and another unlucky loser this season when falling when a High Easter race was at his mercy Altereek (Gordon Gallagher) at 6's were the only others at less than 10's. Sliabh Foy makes a dash for it before the starter drops his flag and gets half way home before Hannah finds the brakes. Clearly in need of new liner pads as the speed isn't a lot slower when the real start is made several minutes later. First How Friendly (Steve Spice 20/1) and Gola Leader (Kelly Keefe 20/1) drop off the pack. Whites Touch (Jody Sole 16/1), Aslapoftheeuro and No Reward slip away from the others going up the hill for the last time. No Reward moves into second place approaching the third last and has reduced the gap behind the leader to a length by the last. Unlike three weeks ago No Reward lands running and finally gets up a couple of strides from the line. Similarly a fast finishing Altereek nicked third off Aslapoftheeuro on the nod. |
| Mens Open |
THE VOLKSWAGEN TOURfEG MENS OPEN RACE Six were declared for the Mens Open. High Easter winner Little Herman (Chris Gordon) was a strong 4/7 favourite. 2005 Mens Open winner The Grey Baron (Peter Bull) was available at 7/2. The remainder were at 8's or more. Kirov King (Gordon Gallagher 12/1) didn't hang around. Ten length lead after a circuit from a group of three (Little Herman, Active Member (Jason Merry 12/1) and Fair Exchange (James Owen 12/1)) with The Grey Baron five lengths behind this group. Kirov King still 15 lengths up on Little Herman as they turn for home at the top of the hill with The Grey Baron another 10 lengths adrift - everybody else given up! Gaps are 10 & 12 at the fourth last but down to eight and eight by the third last. Kirov King jumps second last slowly reducing the gap to four and eight. Little Herman is still closing the gap and The Grey Baron is finishing the fastest of the three. Kirov King goes wide on the bend looking for the better ground and the other pair slip by on the inside Little Herman half a length to the good at the last but The Grey Baron goes past twenty yards from the line. |
| 2.20 Ladies Open |
LADIES OPEN RACE There were 7 declared for the Ladies race. The winner of the other High Easter Open race Minino was the strong - fractionally odds against at 11/10. The only serious opposition in the market was Exodous (Anna Sansom) at 2's with double 2004 Charing winner Dick McCarthy (Sarah Ashby) at 10's the only other horse under 14/1. Glory Trail (Hannah Grissell 14/1) led a tightly bunched pack for the first circuit with Caroline Taylor using similar tactics to those used when winning at High Easter by keeping the favourite about 8 lengths off the others. By the time they reached the highest point of the course on the second circuit Exodous had gone three clear of Glory Trail, the same back to Dick McCarthy with Minino a further length back in fourth. Four from home and the gaps were one, three and one. At the second last it was half a length and the other pair jumped it just a length in arrears - this was going to be a four horse sprint to the line. The leader didn't help himself with a sloppy jump. One to jump and a large handkerchief would cover the four. Exodous was now tiring - Glory Trail rose half a length to the good at the last from Minino - the other pair just a length behind. Minino clawed back the gap inch by inch but the line came too soon. |
| Club Conditions | THE SOUTH EAST HUNTS CLUB MEMBERS CONDITIONS RACE 10 went to post in the Club Conditions race. Godfrey Maundrell has been specialising in these club races for the past couple of years and his 14 year-old recent winner Bally Wirral faced the starter as the 5/4 favourite. There was little to separate the next four in the betting - at 4's were Persian King (Anna Sansom) and Stylish Dave (Gareth Wigley deputising for Lisa Stock who had niggled a recent injury in an earlier ride). At 5's was Westfield John (James Owen) and at 6's Tosti (Felix De Giles). Stylish Dave hot the front at the second jump and stayed there for most of the race as the others jostled for position. Turning for home he still had a eight length lead over Galeaway (Hannah Grissell 20/1) with the favourite two lengths further back - another eight to L'Etang Blue (Peter Bull 8/1) with the remainder out with the washing. Over the second last and the gaps were now 5 lengths and 1. Perhaps the lack of a previous outing this season was telling as the other pair slowly reeled the leader in. All three rose at the last in a line and the favourite prevailed in the run in by under a length with the long time leader the same distance back in third. |
| Maiden |
SPA HOTEL OPEN MAIDEN RACE Nine maidens went to the start. Second here three weeks earlier Selfcertified (Peter Bull) was a strong favourite at 6/4. Just second favourite at 5's was the Phil York trained and ridden Lushes Run. Just two others were priced at under 12's - they being the two 6/1 shots - Court Award (Alex Merriam) and Hendrix (Jody Sole). The nine were reduced to seven at the second fence. Hendrix came off worst in a mid-air collision bringing him to the ground on landing. Claire Philips on Alphaplus, having her first ever ride, found her landing space occupied as she descended from the jump - there was only one possible conclusion thereafter. Something of a tearaway in 2004 See Red Billdan (Steve Spice 12/1) behaved himself impeccably this time at the head of a tightly packed group of six for the next circuit - Phil York holding his mount about six lengths off the back of the pack. Court Award (Alex merriam) belted the ninth ejecting his rider. As Lushes run joined the leading pack two others dropped away. By the time the remaining five reached the turn for home the favourite had taken the lead position. Cleverest (Philip Hall) got within two lengths of the favourite by the second last but as soon as Peter asked Selfcertified to go for home the gap increased quickly. The favourite won as he pleased with See Red Billdan finishing a distant third. |
