THE GILES HOPPER MEMORIAL MAIDEN RACE (OPEN) 8 ran. As they jumped what would be the last with a circuit to go Carvilla (Steve Spice) held a five-length lead over the still-standing remainder of the field, who were covered by eight lengths. The field spread out going down the far side the second time. Turning for home Carvilla was joined by the two market leaders who then dropped him as Carvilla performed his regular last quarter-mile back-pedal. Milanista (Phil York 7/4) took a two length lead into the second last from Hercules Morse (Philip Hall 10/11 fav.). Perhaps remembering his mounts 'faux pas' at Bexhill Philip chose to allow his mount to get no nearer the lead than half a length by the last jump. With the two experienced riders fighting it out to the line Philip managed to get the favourite a length to the good by the time the line came. Inis Eile (Hannah Grissell 12/1) was a remote third. |
| Confined | THE OVENDENS CONFINED RACE As the runners set out on the final circuit a group of Asthefellowsaid (Alex Merriam Evens fav.), L'Etang Bleu (Cynthia Haydon 14/1), Sliabh Foy (Hannah Grissell 5/2) and Steve The Fish (Anna Sansom 14/1) had broken clear of the remaining three runners. L'Etang Blus was next to give best but the remaining three came down to the third last side by side. The favourite opened up a two length lead coming to the last whilst Sliabh Foy, who had dropped two lengths behind the other two at the previous jump rallied again - regaining second but was still four lengths short of the favourite at the line. |
| Restricted | THE Mrs J.B.Stewart Memorial RESTRICTED RACE The five runner Restricted race was seriously depleted at the third fence when the leader Alazylady (Steve Spice 10/1) hit the top of the fence, didn't get the landing gear sorted in time; and crumpled on landing. Battle Honours (Philip Hall 10/1) , in third place, was presumably distracted, hit the top of the fence and turned over. This left Mill Lord (Matt Jackson 9/2) five lengths clear of Napolito (Chris Gordon 1/2 fav.) with the remaining runner Pandeli (Julia Batho 10/1) a distant third. The two market leaders retained position for the next circuit and a half. The riderless, bridleless Alazylady threatened to liven proceeding by turning round, running to the far corner - but then waited, patiently, for the leading pair to come round again until tacking herself behind the pair of them. Chris made his move approaching the third last and the pair jumped the last two fences together.but it was Mill Lord that found the extra length up the finish. Pandeli retained his distant third. |
| Ladies Open | THE Ratling Court Clinic LADIES OPEN RACE After considerable discussion the connections of Stylish Dave (Lisa Stock 2/1) decide it was just about soft enough to allow him to take his chance. Confirmed front-runner Stylish Dave made the initial running but the ground was not soft enough to shake off the attentions of Minino (Caroline Taylor 10/1) or Carryonharry (Cynthia Haydon 1/2 fav.). Having lost Galeaway from the contest when he tripped over a course marker on the first circuit it was Stylish Dave that was first to drop off of the leading group of three with Physical Graffiti (Jenny Gordon 10/1) having already given up trying to stay with the leading group. Turning for home it was Carryonharry four lengths from Minino and the same again to Stylish Dave. Minino hit the top of the third last causing Caroline to lose her balance and eventually come out the side door some twenty yards after the jump. Thereafter places remained unaltered. |
| Mens Open | THE Cluttons MENS OPEN After a closely bunched first circuit it was Little Farmer (Philip Hall 10/1) and Fiery Ring (Chris Gordon 2/1) that broke away down the back straight for the last time - the favourite Cape Stormer (Marcus Gorman 8/13 fav) unable to go with them as they upped the pace in the softer part of the course. He eventually broke clear of the other two runners, once the firmer ground was found, but the other pair had broken too far clear. Little Farmer hung on until the third last when Chris drew Fiery Ring away. |
| Novice Riders | THE INVICTA HORSEBOXES P-T-P ORA CLUB MEMBERS RACE FOR NOVICE RIDERS The betting was close in the seven runner novice rider race. Indoux (Cynthia Haydon 2/1 fav.), Scotmail Boy (Tim O'Callaghan 5/2) and Bustling Rio (Camilla Ewart 3/1) within a point of each other. Jumping the last with a circuit to go Indoux and Scotmail Boy rose together. Glory Trail (Rose Grissell 8/1) a length behind, Bustling Rio a further two lengths behind. Irish Sea (Claire Preston 14/1) was another six lengths behind but dropping off the leading group with Nicodemus (Helen Williams 5/1) another twelve lengths behind. Positions were practically unchanged as they jumped the fourth from home other than the fact that Nicodemus had reduced the gap between him and the leading group of four to sixteen lengths and was now in fifth. Bustling Rio had moved past Glory Trail into third as they jumped the third last - with Nicodemus still sixteen lengths behind the group. Indoux led over the second last by a length from Scotmail Boy, Glory Trail was back in third a length behind, Bustling Rio now a further length back but now Nicodemus was only eight lengths behind his first target. Over the last - Indoux by a length from Scotmail Boy who nodded on landing, sending Tim up his neck and thus effectively giving up his competitive chance. Five lengths behind all of third to fifth rose together. Halfway up the run-in and Indoux's lead was down to two lengths over the fast finishing Nicodemus who had already overhauled the faltering Scotmail Boy As Indoux had, himself, done to Little Herman in the Kent Grand National at Detling in March he was now on the receiving end as Nicodemus swept past twenty yards from the line. This was followed by a period when many bookies were presented with handfuls of confetti as punters tried to reconstitute betting slips discarded when the commentator had declared them worthless with half a mile remaining in the race. |
