Kelly would like it pointed out that - despite various rumours, she IS NOT
the grand-daughter of Paddy Hughes after whom the race is named - although
her father was a good friend of Paddy's.

Race Reviews

THE HOBBS PARKER MAIDEN RACE
(OPEN) One of the four 'fancied' runners Macs View (Stuart Robinson 6/1) made the early running on the 9 runner maiden. He was then joined by See Red Billdan (Steve Spice 16/1). Second favourite Showbiz Floozie (Carl Hill 3/1) was hating the going and never travelling well at the rear. Chosen (Phil York 7/4 fav.) took over the lead as Macs View tired turning for home. Inis Eile (Hannah Grissell 18/1) was the only one to give any kind of chase but it ws a hopeless exercise. Showbiz Floozie at least seeing out the trip to finish third.. |
| Club Members | THE SOUTH EAST HUNTS CLUB MEMBERS RACE (Sponsored by Hallett & Co) Peter Bull on Honourable Spider (1/4 fav.) was happy for Aslapoftheeuro (Phil York 6/1) and Sliabh Foy (Hannah Grissell 6/1) to share a two length lead for the first circuit. The Spider hit the front for the first time with a circuit to go. The previous leaders hung on for another half circuit before first Aslapoftheeuro and then Sliabh Foy became distant chasers. |
| Veteran & Novice Riders Confined | THE PADDY HUGHES MEMORIAL CONFINED VETERAN & NOVICE RIDERS RACE (Sponsored by Ashford Minibuses) Gola Leader (Kelly Keeffe 6/4) was the original even money favourite with Kenny Davis (Paul Blagg 5/4 fav.) opening at 6/4 before being backed in to head the market - this despite the former having won in similar ground last year and running well in much better company last week at Bexhill. The veterans (horse & rider) shared the early lead with Phar Afield (Steve Spice 4/1). It looked as if the punters might be right as Gola Leader took time to reduce a twelve length gap at the start of the last circuit to six lengths as they turned for home. The gap was still two lengths at the second last but mud-loving Gola Leader was able to gallop through the soft ground on the inside turning the last bend and scoot up the straight. |
| Mens Open |
THE LIPSCOMB VOLVO MEMORIAL MENS
OPEN RACE Owens Pet (Philip Hall 10/1) made the early running in the 5 runner Mens Open. With a circuit to go Owen's Pet and the two market leaders Sheriff's Friend (Chris Gordon 1/3 fav.) and Old Kilminchy (Marcis Gorman 5/2) had moved clear of the remainng pair. The early leader tired going into the last mile whilst River Bailiff (Tim O'Callaghan 7/1), who had started the last circuit 20 lengths in arrears started closing on the leading pair quickly once turning for home. He got to within three lengths at the third last - but the others then quickened away again and it was Sheriff's Friend that had the faster turn of foot over the last quarter-mile. |
| Ladies Open |
THE McCABE FORD WILLIAMS LADIES OPEN
RACE Unlike the four previous winners, which had been held up, Stylish Dave (Lisa Stock 1/3 fav.) took up his favoured front position. Ballystone (Sarah Ashby) took up position two lengths behind with Glory Trail (Rose Grissell 5/2) bring up the rear. As they went round the far bend on the last circuit Glory Trail and Ballystone swapped places. Stylish Dave opened the gap to four lengths at the second last and that was about as exciting as it got. |
| Restricted |
THE REGENCY MARQUEES RESTRICTED RACE We lost The Bag Man (3/1) when he gave Steve Spice the Morse message (see homepage) at the eighth fence. The first of the remaining three to drop off the pace was the favourite Butcher Beyes (Sam Hanson Evens) with Rockswood Clover (Chris Gordon 5/2) going clear of Battle Honours (Philip Hall 8/1) on the run home from the far end. |
