Race reviews
| Hunt | There were five declared for the Hunt race. This was an evenly matched race, according to the layers, with Brackenheath (Hannah Grissell) and Dixon Varner (Frazer Marshall) both at 7/4 whilst Daydreamer (Andrew Hickman) was only a quarter point longer at 2's. Acuteangle (Jeremy Wall) and Jojo (Greg Barker MP) were the outsiders at 10/1. The betting proved pretty accurate as first Jojo and then Acuteangle dropped off the pace. At the fifth from home Daydreamer started to lose touch. Dixon Varner pulled out a three length lead turning for home and Brackenheath was never able to close the gap. |
| Restricted | Five again for the Restricted. Placed in all three outings this season Granny Smith (Chris Gordon) was favourite at 13/8. Only slightly longer, at 2's, was the recent Charing Maiden winner- Lord Of The North under Phil York. The Grey Baron (Peter Bull) and Straight Baron (Philip Hall) were priced at 4's. The field did the first circuit fairly packed. - Granny Smith leading by a couple of lengths in front of a group of three with Lord Of The North a couple of lengths behind the trio. As the pace quickened up going down the back straight second time round Granny Smith and The Grey Baron opened up a four length lead whilst Phil York moved Lord Of The North from last to third. At the third from home The Grey Baron and Lord Of The North jumped together, but the former tired as Chris got another run out of Granny. Granny and Lord jumped the last two fences together but the mare found the little extra needed in the run to the post. |
| Mens Open | Five once more. Parham winner Splash And Dash (Andrew Hickman) was the even money favourite. Next in the betting was Little Farmer (Philip Hall) at 9/4. Itsmyturnnow (Chris Gordon) at 4's was the only other horse not available at 10's. Little Farmer and Little Worsel led early. Castle Arrow was dropped after a circuit. As the pace quickened up down the back straight on the last circuit the leading three in the betting broke away but Itsmyturnnow dropped off the other two as they turned at the end of the straight - Splash And Dash not helping his cause by jumping left away from the corner. Little Farmer extended the lead to ten lengths over the second last and was never in danger thereafter. |
| Ladies Open | The Ladies had six runners - but the lack of numbers was compensated by class - indeed Ladies Open winner earlier this season Kincora (Lisa Stock) was one of the three outsiders at 12's. Going for a hat-trick of Ladies Opens Tom Cobbler (Pippa Hall) was the evens favourite. At 9/4 was Cedar Chief (Jenny Gordon) - also going for his third consecutive Open victory. Runner-up in two Ladies Opens this season and winner of his hunt race last time out Dick McCarthy (Sarah Ashby) was at 5/1. Four Open class horses including two front runners. Not surprisingly Cedar Chief and Kincora made sure that the race was started at a reasonable, although in this case not breakneck, speed. The leading pair had a ten length lead over the others as they jumped the last on the back straight first time round. Helen Gordon on Prime Course became the first rider of the day to inspect the turf. Seven from home there was only a length covering the three market leaders and Kincora. After the final Open Ditch Kincora dropped off the other three. Cedar Chief had a three length lead over Dick McCarthy over the third last with Tom Cobbler the same behind in third. The gap was down to a length at the second last but Sarah had her mount half a length to the good over the last and went on to win by two lengths from Jenny and Pippa. |
| Confined | Nine faced the starter in the Confined. Favourite was the Phil York partnered Tricky Trevor at 2/1. Winner at Penshurst Tods Brother (Alex Merriam) was a 3's. Tell The Nipper (Marcus Gorman) was priced at 7/1 whilst, at just a point longer (8's) were Kenny Davis (Paul Blagg) and Live Wire (Charlotte Benstead). The remainder were at 12's or longer. The field did the first circuit relatively closely bunched. As they completed the first circuit Galeaway, Tods Brother and Live Wire shared the lead of a pack of seven. Down the back straight Galeaway dropped back as Kenny Davis made progress from the rear towards the leaders. Four lengths covered the leading four as they turned for home. River Bailiff led over the third last from Tods Brother but the latter made the best of the down hill run. Tods Brother led over the last two fences with Tricky Trevor and Kenny Davis slowly but unsuccessfully closing the gap as River Bailiff tired. |
| Maiden | Betting was open in the 11 horse Maiden race. Placed in his last three outings Sword Fighter (Phil York) was the 3/1 favourite. Second earlier in the season Whats Next was priced at 5/1 under Andrew Hickman. Third in his last outing, at Charing, was the David Phelan ridden Siobhans Quinner at 6/1. The other eight were at 8/1 or more. Having had only one faller so far today the first then claimed two riders - Stuart Robinson and Noel Wilson were unseated from Pistol Night and Spruce Goose respectively (Note - although the latter was attended by medics on the ground for nearly twenty minutes and eventually taken to hospital it was hoped that his injuries were not as bad as first thought - confirmed as OK on Monday). As they jumped the first fence of the last circuit five lengths covered the eight that were still standing. Early leader Execute started to back-pedal when joined by Siobhan's Quinner (David Phelan 8/1), Self Certified and Sword Fighter going down the back straight second time of asking. Whats Next lost touch as he started to jump badly left. At the fourth fence from home Siobhan's Quinner led from Sword Fighter, Royal Cruise and Self Certified. The latter pulled up and we then lost Sword Fighter at what turned out to be the second last leaving Siobhan's Quinner the easy winner from the only other finisher Royal Cruise (Philip Hall). |
