| Hunt | Lively Lord (Chris Gordon) was the hot favourite at 1/4 on. Last year's winner Jack Hackett (Colin Hall 11/2) was next in the betting with Macs View (Kate Pegrum) at 8's and the other two runners at 25/1 upwards. Having successfully negotiated the first fence this time Chris decided to make all the running. Turning for home only 'the missus' on Find The Lady at 33/1 looked to cause him to break out of a canter whilst Mac's View took the third place. |
| Restricted | Five lined up for the Restricted race. Maiden winner at Charing Sendonthecheque (Tim Underwood) was 5/4 favourite. Double Thatch (Jason Merry) was at 9/2 with 11/2 both Hurricane Harry (Anna Sansom) and Mr. Chataway (Hannah Grissell). The outsider Ishma (Darren Page 33/1) did most of the early running and with three quarters of a mile to go it was he and the favourite that went clear of the others. When the favourite hit the front three from home the writing looked on the wall but Ishma was clearly not aware of the bookies lack of confidence. Tim Underwood had to keep the favourite up to his work to the line. Hurricane Harry was the remote third. |
| Confined | There were five declared for the next race as well. Supreme Irony (Chris Gordon) was made 6/4 favourite with 3/1 against Tell The Nipper (Marcus Gorman) and White Smoke (Russell Ross). By the fourth from home it had turned into a dual between Supreme Irony and Tell The Nipper but the favourite had the upper hand to win by 4 lengths with Tidal Reef (10/1) finishing third. |
| Ladies Open | Just the four for the Ladies. Winner at Parham Tom Cobbler (Pippa Hall) was made evens fav. Next in the betting was Bitofamixup (Jenny Gordon) at 9/4 with the raider from Wales (really!) Toskano (Vicky Flood) a 7/2 shot. With a circuit to go the three had broken clear of the other runner. Four from home Toskano took a 3 length lead on the other two. Bitofamixup closed the gap the half a length by the second last but the invader drew clear again going to the last and up the hill. The favourite finished third. |
| Mens Open | Back up to 5 runners for the Mens Open where the punters had Ballinure Boy (Chris Gordon) as 1/2 favourite. There was little to choose between the next three in the betting with Brackenheath (Philip Hall) at 5/1, Kenny Davis (Paul Blagg) at 11/2 and Lunardi (Tom Faulkner), another part of the Welsh invasion, at 6's. Winner here last year Brackenheath did most of the early running but eight lengths covered the whole field as they turned out on the final circuit. The favourite hit the front four from home. However four were still in with a chance going to the last but the favourite had enough to keep his lead from Brackenheath and Lunardi. Kenny Davis was only a couple of lengths behind the third horse - an excellent piece of sticking to the task by Paul Blagg whose saddle had slipped both back and round and was closer to his mount's dangly bits than the horses wither where it had presumably been at the start of the race. The victory took Chris Gordon's victory count into three figures! A fine total for a young lad just out of his teens! |
| Veteran & Novice Riders | For the beginners and oldies race a total of eight came under the starters orders. Tom Faulkner (Novice) was made favourite on another Welsh raider Kiltulaa Lad at evens. Next in the betting were were David Evatt's (not novice) Glacial Enterprise at 7/2 and at 7's Tim Underwood's (not novice either!) Legal Storm with the remainder at 14's upwards. The favourite and Master Jake (James Sarchet 25/1) shared most of the early running. As they turned for home the favourite and Legal Storm had broken eight lengths clear of the remainder. The favourite dived through the last and Tom looked round to his left to see that he had Tim beaten. What he hadn't spotted was wiley old campaigner Tooth Pick (Kate Blatcher 14/1) had come with a wet sail and had nipped up the tiny space he had left on the inside to pass the pair of them on the run-in. |
| Open Maiden | Bookies know not to offer long prices about anything owned by the Cockerall Cowing team and trained by Di Grissell so Rainy Day (Philip Hall) was duly set as the 6/4 favourite on his English debut. The Wee General (Simon Cobden), with form of 432, was, not surprisingly next in the betting at 3/1. The Flying Dragon (Peter Bull 7/2) was the only other runner shorter than 12/1. As they turned for home The Wee General held a length lead over Rainy Day and these two had broken about 6 lengths clear of the chasers. The latter had the inside on the turn and the two rose at the second last together. Perhaps the advantage of having a couple of runs already under his belt helped The Wee General to take the last a length in front and keep that lead to the line. The Flying Dragon lead home the following bunch. |
