Race reviews
| Hunt | 7 runners were declared to start off the new season. Seod Rioga (Chris Gordon) was set as favourite - going odds-against (5/4) late in the betting. Kenny Davis (Paul Blagg) was next in the betting at 7/2 followed by Cock A Hoop (Andrew Coveney) at 9/2. The rest at 7's upwards. The latter appeared seriously disinclined to line up - requiring quite a bit of assistance from the mounted assistants. Having jumped off with the others the horse jumped seriously right throughout his race - Andrew took his horse wide to avoid interfering with others but was therefore never a serious threat - Parham & Godstone will be more suited! The favourite, a definite stayer, made most and drew out a four length lead turning for home. Kenny Davis closed the gap to within a length by the second last but the old campaigner had a little more up his sleeve and the 14 year old drew away in the home straight to win by 5 lengths. Three Of Clubs (Miss C Haydon 20/1) was the only other completer. |
| Restricted | A very open betting market with 4/1 available in places about 3 of the 15 horses - the out-of-area Gangster (J Oldring) & Kilvoydan (A Ward-Thomas) plus the local Sound Gossin (Andrew Hickman). Naughty Dandy at 6's, Glenmont 7's and 10/1 bar. With the back 2 peeling off as the remaining 13 set out on the last circuit - still led by Going Primitive who had set the early pace - Kilvoydan was the first faller. Only 12 lengths covered the remaining dozen 7 fences from home. Sound Gossin slipped the field turning at the top of the hill. Namron (David Dunsdon) was the only one to cut the lead back but never got nearer than 4 lengths. Gangster pipped Naughty Dandy for third on the line. |
| Club Conditional | 11 contested the club race with Lively Lord (Chris Gordon) & Rustic Revelry (Phil York) sharing favouritism at 9/4. Dixon Varner (Fraser Marshall) was 7/2 with 8/1 upwards bar these three. Tom Hills on Camden Road (33/1 - quite generous for the winner of 2 chases?) elected to do most of the early running and as the runners turned away on the second circuit he was joined by Rustic Revelry. As they turned for home it was clear that the only question was by how much Phil York was going to win as he drew away easily. Although, as many expected, Camden Road tired badly in the last half mile he still managed to hold off Lovely Lindsey (Peter Bull 33/1) for the runner-up place. |
| Mixed Open | The betting in the 9 runner mixed open was close - probably just starting favourite in the end was Tubber Roads (James Diment) at 11/4. Sheriff's Friend (Chris Gordon) was generally available at 3's whilst Struggles Glory (David Robinson) drifted out from 3's to 4's but was backed back in to 3's again shortly before the off. Tough Terms (Peter Bull) at 6's, Satcotino at 10's and the other 4 runners at 33's. When Tough Terms fell at the half way stage it was Struggles Glory and Sheriff's Friend who drew away from the field. Struggles opened up a few lengths lead going up the hill - Sheriff's slowly reeled him in the run for home and just got his nose in front entering the straight. The two jumped the last together and went neck and neck to the line where the judge was unable to separate them. Satcotino (Phil York) took third.
Sherriff's on the left, Struggles on the right (& riderless Tough Terms between them and the judge!) |
| Intermediate | In the 8 runner Intermediate recent Open runner-up and by 3 years the youngest of the field Jackie Jarvis (Phil York) was made 6/4 favourite. Dragon Lord (Chris) from the Jenny Gordon yard was next at 5/2 and at 7/2 was Glory Trail (Philip Hall). Nubro (Andrew Hickman) traded at 8's with 14/1 upwards the rest. Several horses shared the early running with Nubro always there or thereabouts. Phil York took up the lead after one circuit had been completed and was always in control - indeed over the last circuit the only risk to the favourite was that Phil York would damage his neck with his continuous checks to see if anything else was coming from the pack. Dragon Lord chased the mare home to keep her honest with Oxendale (Harry Fowler 14/1) filling the third spot. Only a baby at 6 the winner looks as if she could go a long way in the game! |
| Maiden | Biggest field of the day was 15 for the maiden. Once again some close betting with Annie Blaker's placed hurdler No Dramas (Chris Gordon) starting favourite at 7/2. On 4's was the other 'hot' rider Phil York on Lady L'Orelei at 4/1. Another two previously placed horses Storm Rising (Andrew Hickman) and Smokey Robot (Miss C Cowe) were chalked up at 5's with 7/1 upwards the rest. Scotch Bob (James Diment 8/1), who ran a couple of useful looking races last year before tiring in the latter stages of his races, did the early pace-making and going up the hill he drew away from the field with only Lady L'Orelei keeping him company. The writing looked on the wall as Phil York drew up alongside the early leader as they struck for home but Scotch Bob's trainer has clearly got a bit more stamina in him this year and he drew away readily at the end. Tonrin (Dan Dennis) finished third - another place to add to the several in his record already. |
