Race by race review
| Restricted | 7 runners declared in race for which River Bailiff (Jenny Grant 6/4) was a slight favourite over Buckaholic (Phil York 2/1). Turning for home it had developed into a race between three - Dinsey Finnegan (Chris Gordon 9/2), the favourite and Gabaka De Thaix (Paul Townsley 7/1). The latter was first to crack. The favourite took a fractional lead from the long time leader Dinsey Finnegan between the third and second last jumps but Chris took it back turning for home and held on for a four length victory. |
| Veteran & Novice Riders | Biggest field of the day was the 12 from which High Learie (Major J Barnard) was a clear 7/4 favourite. The only other runner for which 10's or better was not available was El Gee (Paul Townsley) at 5's. The favourite led for most - with the whole dozen still standing as they set out on the last circuit. El Gee and Simony Sam joined the favourite three from home where High Learie hit the fence to throw his chances away. Simony Sam quickly back-pedalled allowing fast finishing Caesers Reign (Tim Underwood 25/1) to deny the favourite second place behind the Townsley mare. |
| Confined | Lively Lord (Chris Gordon) was made 2/1 favourite of the 7 runners with the consistent Oxendale (Peter Bull) at 5/2. Chris led from flag fall - Legal Storm closed to within a length with four to go - but Chris quickened his mount again. Peter Bull brought his mount with his usual late finish and went head to head with Chris to the line - failing by a short head to totally reduce the deficit. Legal Storm (Tim Underwood 5/1) took third. |
| Ladies Open | Only two lined up for the ladies. Mr. Miller (Jenny Grant) was 5's on with the opponent Hawaiin Youth (Claire Anthony) at 5/2. Despite having only her third race ride Claire tried taking the initiative but once Jenny gained the lead with just under a circuit to go the result was a formality. |
| Mens Open | Only two again for the mens. Jenny's 'other half' Chris Gordon matched her at 5's on - this time on Prime Course. Reign Dance (Paul Townsley) was the 4/1 opposition this time. On this occasion Chris waited until the second last before quickening away for his hat-trick. |
| Maiden | Back up to 10 runners for the maiden. Runner-up here a fortnight ago Star Glow (Phil York) was made 7/4 fav. Following up in the betting were Thunder Lee (David Dunsdon) at 9/2, Mr. Chataway (Hannah Grissell) at 5's, Gills Gale (N Sheriden) at 11/2. After a number of inspections in the paddock and at the start the second favourite was withdrawn. Turning for home four were still in with a chance but the favourite was first to drop away. Despite his known thoughts about being in front Mr. Chataway was going so well that Hannah had no option but to take the lead turning for home. Jumping the last in front the advantage of running back towards the boxes held slightly stronger than the desire to have another horse to follow and Gills Gale couldn't haul back the gap whilst Green Missile (Russell Ross 25/1) took third. |
| Crawley & Horsham Hunt Race | Rescheduled from Parham meeting abandoned in March Three runners declared. Favourite at 5/4 was Wibbley Wobbley ridden by owner Jamie Hawksfield having his last race ride. The two opponents were both winners here a fortnight ago. Maiden winner Rush 'N Tear (Nigel Benstead) was at 13/8 whilst White Smoke (Russell Ross) was at 3's. Rush 'N Tear tried to do it all from the front as two weeks ago. Wibbley Wobbley, was just losing touch when crumpling on landing at the sixth last - thus preventing a happy career ending for his owner. The leader then made mistakes at two of the next three jumps - and this seemed to knock the stuffing out of him. Russell Ross quickly nipped past for an easy victory. |
