Race by race review
| Hunt | Four started this race. Two of the riders - cousins Phillipa Menzies and Rose Grissell were having their first rides on General Jackie (12/1) and Mr. Chataway (3/1) respectively. Favourite however was Sound Gossin (1/3) ridden by Andrew Hickman - who would claim to have ridden more winners than the debutants have had 'hot dinners'. Both ladies started their accounts with a UR. Andrew and the remaining runner Catherine Jiggens on Erins Pride (10/1) jumped the last two fences in unison with Catherine snatching victory by a head. |
| Restricted | The restricted drew 7 runners with Spiderdore (Tom Hills 5/2) just favoured in front on Nubro (Andrew Hickman 3/1) and Shoveontommy (Stuart Robinson 3/1). The latter made most of the early running. Tom Hills pulled out the favourite (lame) before the fourth last. Nubro kicked clear turning for home and drew away easily. Glenmont (plumb last with a circuit to go) ran on to take second from The Bishops Sister (Hannah Folkard 20/1) in the run-in. |
| Mens Open | Only four runners in the Mens Open for which Brackenheath (Philip Hall) was made 10/11 fav. Ballinure Boy (Andrew Hickman) was at 5/4 with the other two available from 14's. The favourite made most until ploughing through the fourth last. Andrew Hickman quickly took the opportunity to nip into the lead. The favourites confidence seemed to disappear for a couple of fences by which time Andrew had drawn well clear. Caddy Man (Andrew Coveney 14/1) took third. |
| Ladies Open | Only four again for the ladies in which Kincora (Lisa Stock) was made 10/11 fav. Over The Country (Sarah Ashby) was next in the betting at 2's. Kincora went off at what the commentator called a 'stupid' pace and Petra Bryan-Brown became dislodged from Night Thyne trying to stay with favourite. The other two closed within five lengths going away on the second circuit. However the favourite quickened away again easily turning for home. Burntwood Melody (Didy Rowell) ran on for second whilst Sarah Ashby very sensibly dismounted from a seriously lame horse between the last fence and the finishing line. |
| Confined | The confined had nine runners. Last weeks Penshurst winner White Smoke (Russell Ross) was favourite at 3's. Call Home (Tom Hills) at 9/2 and El Gee (Paul Townsley) 5/1 were next in the betting. Call Home made the early running. Six of the nine were still covered by five lengths coming to the sixth last where jumping debutant Rheinbold unshipped Phil York. Kenny Davis (Paul Blagg 11/2) then slipped the remainder turning for home. Sarah Ashby on Lovely Lynsey 7/1 tried unsuccessfully to reduce the gap whilst White Smoke took third. |
| Maiden | Biggest field of the day was the 14 in the maiden. Favourites were Warrbow (Philip Hall) and Moon Rising (Peter Bull) at 3's. Scotch Bob (Peter Hickman 12/1) made most of the early running together with Warrbow. However both of these gave away lengths at each fence by jumping left - a habit which became more and more drastic at each fence. Phil York took Hatch Gate (8/1) to the lead with a circuit to go and made gains at each fence with superior jumping. Another grey Warrbow was only one to get close whilst Scotch Bob would have been much closer than third on a left handed course. |
