| Moderate | Three of the 7 runners were fancied. Splash and Dash (Andrew Hickman) & Amber Life (Phil York) were priced at about 2/1. The grey Flying Veil (Philip Hall) was available at 11/4 and then proceeded to make most of the running with Amber Life just behind. As one of the joint favourites faded with just over half a mile to go so the other moved up to replace him. In the end the pair jumped the last together with the grey having to give best to Andrew Hickman, driving at his best, with the other grey Dom Samouri (Peter Bull 7/1) taking third. |
| Restricted | Note - the prices quoted below were recorded before Nubro (Andrew Hickman 5/2) was withdrawn in the paddock due to a minor nose bleed. Yallah Habibi (Philip Hall 6/4) was sent off favourite. Didy Rowell on Viking Lily (5/1) slipped the field going away from the boxes on the last circuit and try as he might the favourite couldn't haul the mare back. Glenmont (Lisa Stock 5/1) made it a hat-trick of thirds in the 8 horse field. |
| Confined (Novices & Veterans) |
Wibbley Wobbley (Jamie Hawksfield 4/6) was made favourite with Dixon Varner (Fraser Marshall 2/1) the only other one of the 6 runners attracting support. Six was reduced to five when Physical Fun (R Crosby 6/1) decided that the starter was pulling an April 1st joke when he dropped the flag - this earned him his second yellow card of the season. The 'jolly' ran his second 'flat' race after doing so well at Charing. This left Dixon Varner to make all over the last circuit to beat Garrison Friendly (Noel Wilson 7/1). The favourite finished third. |
| Ladies Open | With Kincora (Lisa Stock 5/4 fav.) & Burntwood Melody (Didy Rowell 2/1) having, between them, done most of the early donkeywork at the early Charing meetings it was a fair guess that these two would quickly dominate the 8 runners. Although the grey closed in the softer patches the favourite kept a relentless gallop. As Didy's mount finally lost touch turning for home Dawn Flight (Hannah Grissell 8/1) closed on the leader and put his nose fractionally in front approaching the last. In the days second driving finish Kincora eventually scored a far too long deserved Ladies Open victory. |
| Mens Open | The six runners were split two ways - the fancied ones - Rightsaidfred (Peter Bull 4/7) the veteran at 14, was up against 9 year-old Ballinure Boy (Andrew Hickman 5/2) and 10 year old Brackenheath (Philip Hall 9/2) - and the remaining three were all available at 33's. Always carefully looked after by his owner-rider Rightsaidfred seems to retain an enthusiasm for his racing and someone probably needs to check the record book to see what the record number of wins for a horse of his age is. Brackenheath won the race of the 'other fancied runners' for the second spot. |
| Maiden |
Biggest field of the day was the 11 in the maiden. Betting was close here - Mr. Chataway (Hannah Grissell 5/2), Tough Terms (Peter Bull 7/2), Sword Fighter (Phil York 4/1) & Union Square (Andrew Hickman 4/1). However the race wasn't as close. Tough Terms, who had run well in higher level races, won easily. Despite having the psychological advantage of racing back towards the boxes Mr. Chataway could only manage another second to the many in his career record. Sword Fighter finished third. |
